“Girl in a Flower Crown,” by Jennifer Nieves

Colored pencil, pastel chalk and tissue paper on gray paper

I got the inspiration for this piece when I stumbled onto a photo set of this girl a few weeks before the assignment. She was just so stunning, and the colors were so vibrant, I just wanted to recreate it. I think the piece took about two weeks to make.

For me, painting used to be, and sometimes still is, something I do when I’m upset. I would sit down, play some music and not move until the entire painting was done. The whole process helps me to calm down and focus, and I get to channel how I’m feeling into a painting, which affects the overall look of it. But for the most part, I just like creating art; I like knowing I can create something beautiful from nothing.
